Seudati Dance

 Seudati is one  dance that is favored by the people  of East Aceh. At first, this dance is growing in North Aceh  and Pidie, then introduced into, East Aceh and accepted by society as, dances typical of the region.






          The word Seudati comes from the Arabic = Syahadatain , which means recognition . This dance has evolved in Aceh since hundreds of years ago and at first not characterized by Islam. When Islam came the dance is filled with Islamic values ​​that can be used as media propaganda.


         Characteristic Seudati dance, is heroic, cheerful, and Togetherness. Besides, this dance does not use musical instruments and the dancers instead ring finger flick, pounding feet, pat your chest and poems sung by two narrators, called Aneuk Syahi. Companion poems, usually religious theme or information about the country's development. During the war in Aceh, Seudati dance used to burn the spirit of the youth to fight against the invaders.

           Seudati dance played by eight people consisting of one person who called Sych leader, a man servant Sych, 2 people left aide called apeetwie and one person called maid behind apeet tub, as well as three regular assistants. This dance has very simple dress which consisted of plain white pants, long sleeve shirt and tight white, songket cloth wrapped tightly around the waist and rencong tucked at the waist and a red headband. Describing Seudati dance about fighting spirit, heroic attitude, cheerfulness, agility, and dynamic attitude to life, mutual cooperation and unity.

         Uniform fashion is only for the main players, while aneuk syahi not have to dress uniform. The most important parts in the Seudati  dance consists of: likok (style: dance), Saman (melodies), rhythmic agility, also stories about heroism, historical and religious themes.
In general, this dance is exhibited on the stage and divided into several rounds, among others: First round, beginning with saleum (greeting) introductions by aneuk syahi say only:


Assalamualaikum Lon tamong lam seung,
Lon jak bri saleum keu bang syekh teuku…



Syahi aneuk function, to accompany the entire dance sequence. The first greeting is replied by the Sheikh with a different style (tone):


 Kru seumangat tamong lon lam seung,
Jak lon saleum to jamee Lil bri ...
 
         Poem above was repeated by both apeetwie and apeet tub. At this introductory stage, only eight dancers contort the body in graceful movements,  tap the chest and eight finger flick that follows the motion rhythm of the song.Look smart movement is seen when entering the next round. When the staging is a match, then after the first group completed the first round, will be followed by a second group with different techniques.

         Usually, the first group will come down from the stage. The second half, starting with the bath saman, the entire principal dancer stood in a circle in the middle of the stage, in order to match the sound and likok determine what will be played. Sheikh was in the middle of the circle. This circular shape symbolizes that the people of Aceh are always muepakat (deliberation) in taking any decision. Muepakat that, if the context associated with this dance, is consulted to determine the Saman or likok to be played. Likok demonstrated uniformity in motion, agility and dexterity to play according to the chant a song sung by aneuk syahi. Likok chant begins with:


 Iiiiii la lah alah ya ilalah…. (slow and fast)


The entire principal dancers will follow the rhythm of the song sung in a fast or slow depending on the chant sung by the aneuk syahi. Another phase is the phase of the Saman. In this phase a variety of poems and rhymes delivered with each other and shouted to be heard between aneuk syahi and sheiks are followed by all dancers.


When the sheikh says:
walahuet seuneut apet ee kataheee, hai syam,
then it syahi Anek will  replied with an answer:
lom ka dicong bak iboih, anuek puyeh ngon cicem subang.


To eliminate the boredom of the audience, each chapter concludes with formasilanie, ie to improve the formation that have previously been irregular.
